Each month I publish a fully transparent income report which documents my online earnings. These income reports exist to demonstrate my progress, share my experiences, and motivate others who want to make money online.
Check out my online income report for August 2015.
What I Did In August
August was a productive month but not the most profitable.
I enjoyed my first real holiday of the year this month. I traveled down to the Gold Coast, Australia and stayed on level 58 of Soul hotel. I spent most of my time relaxing and taking in the amazing view (pictured below), but I also got to play some live poker which has been on my to-do list for a while now. I had a great time.
This trip made me realize that I’m after a change of scenery. By 2016 I will have been living in the city for 2 years and it might very well be time to move on.
I took plenty of time off in August but I still managed to get a lot done. This year I have been heavily focused on business upkeep and maintenance tasks, such as improving my existing products and platform. Business upkeep is tedious, but the worst part is that it doesn’t always translate into obvious or immediate profits.
For example, when I update my HTML5 games I’m not able to resell them to my clients just because they have been updated. In fact, I give them the updated versions for free. While upkeep is necessary for future-proofing my business it doesn’t reward me in the short-term.
Business upkeep is mostly behind-the-scenes, too. This year I have hired a dozen freelancers, updated every single one of my games, and spent hours tweaking my websites. It has been extremely time-consuming and there’s always more I can do.
I worked 85 productive hours in August and took 11/31 days off.
Here’s a quick look at how my online platform performed during August 2015.
The games I publish were played 783,716 times (28,467,742 total).
My websites were viewed 37,916 times (5,461,477 total) by 16,628 unique visitors.
I have a total of 32,599 subscribers across various platforms, up 1,281 from last month. My current Klout score of 52.87 places me in the top 10% of influential social media users.
Notably, this month I have dropped the Twitch category from my subscriber count. I decided that I won’t be streaming in the near future, due to a variety of technical issues and the lack of growth potential in the game development category on Twitch. I will probably revisit the idea of livestreaming in the future.
Social media growth was solid, with expected values across the board.

Online Income Report
With the amount of time I have been taking off work, and the fact that I have been focused on business upkeep rather than immediate profits, I’m not too surprised by this month’s bleak results.
During August 2015 I earned $1,437 solely online ($227,169 total), down $1,511 from last month. My average income over the past 12 months is $6,655 so this was a significantly below average month.
While website advertising revenue is abnormally high, frequent readers will be more surprised to see only a small profit from HTML5 games. There’s nothing specific I can blame for the lapse…it was just a bad month with little new business coming in, and I haven’t been proactive about finding new business. I plan to make a big sales push in October but currently I’m focused on other tasks.
I have finished the update to my book Making Money With HTML5 and I’m currently planning the launch. I’m also working on a new product (it’s a secret!) but most of my time is being spent updating my games and working on new ones. I currently have 6 new games in production which is more than enough to keep me busy. Hopefully I can still end the year on a high.
